So I flipped the switch. I've been on Mastodon for a number of years, and I honestly, really did like it there. For the most part the people were awesome and I loved the way everything worked. But sometimes even the best things don't work out the way you wish they would.
A year or two ago someone made a bridge, appropriately named, "Bridgy," That would link BlueSky and Mastodon. This was initially a tool that would automatically link every account on a server that allowed it to with the BlueSky service. A lot of people really didn't like this. Not only was it against the vibe of Mastodon's culture, but it was also being forced on a lot of us who were on Masstodon specifically because we didn't want anything to do with BlueSky. So it was blocked on most of the instances I ever touched, and I thought that would be the end of it.
But recently a few people brought it up again. They stated that a few things have changed, it was now opt in, and they wanted the service to be unblocked. The meow.social maintainers did the most democratic thing they could have and put it up for a vote. And unfortunately this time, the vast majority of people that voted seem to be voting for it. As of today, it's still about 2/3 for 1/3 against, as it's been since the poll came out. Clearly, this is going to go through.
The developer of Bridgy was a real asshole when he started that software. And I don't want anything to do with it. But the majority of people either don't remember that, or don't know / care about that. So I decided to just not be there anymore. I'll miss Mastodon, but that's just how it goes.
Honestly the hardest part about all of it was the people that didn't want me to leave. I didn't really expect there would be people that wanted me to stay there. I'm just one little dude, I don't usually think I mean that much to anyone. I left my contacts there so hopefully I see some of them in other places. I know a few folks have followed me here, thanks for that. But I also know from past experience that today was goodbye to a lot of folks.
I like the fediverse, I like the openness of it, and maybe some day I'll go back to it if I can figure out how the hell to host my own server and keep up with it. I've seen a few folks try it, and hosting it from your own machines seems to be a bit of a nightmare. I can't even make photos work on this thing the way I want to yet, so I guess we'll see what I can learn as I go.
In the meantime, goodbye Meow, it's been fun.
